I have an "old" 720 TV.  From 12 ft you can tell the difference.

Sure - but if you look at a 1080-capable TV and compare a 720p signal and a 1080i signal on that unit, you'd be hard-pressed to see any difference.

That's one of the reasons a lot of the improvements since the intro of the 1080 units have been in the cycles per second, affecting frame rates. Higher MHz means a picture that seems sharper and more responsive, especially for sports - even if the actual resolution is the same.

Having cut the cable a couple of years ago I will add that Roku is the way to go.
I have a concern on upgrading to a high quality outdoor antenna. What do y'all recommend for lightning suppression? I recently lost thousands of dollars worth of network,  TV, phone and alarm to a strike so I'm a little reluctant to put a large metal object on top of my house!

TV antennas are normally DC grounded (a DC connection to the mast), so a good, fat, copper ground wire from the mast to an 8' ground rod below it is a good start.  After that, you can get suppressors for the purpose.  Polyphaser makes some high quality lightning arrestors made to go in the feedline.  http://mjsales.net/products/lightning-surge-suppressor-for-commercial-catv-matv-is-75f-c1?variant=1604564097   There are many less expensive gas tube type suppressors available too.

Polyphaser's web site also has some good information about lightning and how to prevent damage to your equipment by driving a network of ground rods, having a common ground for the whole building, etc..
