My book says the final drive oil is good til 30K miles before changing. is this correct?

That is what it says. Gotta remove the back wheel to refill it, so don't drain unless you can get the wheel off. Personally, I'll do it every tire change.

I can only guess it has to be the fact that motorcycles are more exposed to the weather.  And I've always changed tranny and final drive per schedule (except I change tranny and final drive as I did with BMW .... every other oil change .... sorry, guys, I have sinned against all that is Guzzi)

My 2007 Mazda6 with 5 speed manual is still running on the original tranny lube.  Don't even know if the transaxle requires anything special.  The old SOB just keeps running.  At 122,000 miles.

So, what is it with shaft drive bikes that demands their 80/90 be changed out every 6000/10000 miles, when manual transmission cars barely call for changing the hypoid oil at all?  Do the bikes really suck up more moisture than a car?  Or does the tranny grind up that much more metal because of shift dogs vs synchronizers?  Or does this lube change simply make us feel better about how we treat our machines?  (And I'm one who is anal about routine maintenance.)

The tranny and final drive don't grind up metal (hopefully), but they do grind up oil - literally. Long-chain organic molecules (like those in oil) cab be broken up (technical term is 'shear'), which is what causes gear oil to break down. This is different from what causes motor oil to break down, which has more to do with the heat, combustion products contaminating the oil, and so on. I'm not sure what the reason is for the difference between trannies/diffs on cars and equivalent units on bikes, and I'm not sure the motorcycle engineers are sure either. After all, BMW said a few years ago that their final drives were 'lifetime' units and never required service. The real world came out and bit their butts for that one.

I've been having the shop change the rear drive oil at each tire change. Cheap insurance. About every 10000 miles.

There are several oils available that meet the 'Long Life' specs of the recommended Agip/ENI stuff Guzzi suggest and I'm sure that they are superior to the *Normal* stuff in terms of breakdown resistance. Thing is it doesn't matter how good the oil is if there is particulate contamination in the oil. This will be far more damaging to bearings than to the gear teeth and the only way to get rid of them is to drain them out with the oil.

The other thing is frequent changes allow you to examine the oil and you can tell a lot about what is happening with a component buy looking at its oil.

Here in oz that's two to three cups off coffee at the local shop.

But, why needlessly enrich OPEC members or Americans?  My V7II calls for gearbox oil changes only every 60,000 km (~37,200 mi).  I'll gladly spend the money I save on coffee.

It's certainly not going to hurt anything to change the oil on any vehicle system more often than the folks who actually designed the vehicle recommend.

Me, I will save my money for something else.

Nobody is getting rich selling oil (or anything else) to Guzzisti.  LOL!

I change it every tyre change. 250 ml. Remove the breather bolt or rotate the tyre to prevent an airlock while pouring in the fresh oil.
