Windshield for EV
« on: November 01, 2016, 10:32:58 AM »
Hi,

Have a 1998 EV using a National Cycle Plexistar 2 windshield. I have adjusted just about every way imaginable and still handles terrible. On the highway wind buffering is awful and  when trying to pass it's almost impossible/dangerous. Any thoughts to a different style or brand screen?

Thanks

You should see what Ratguzzi does to his windscreens to reduce buffeting.

He has the right idea. Look at the Swanee fairing that's popular with our brand. A couple holes near the bottom on either side of the instruments will introduce a draft that will reduce the buffeting.

I use a Rifle windshield on my Vintage. It's not quite as wide and not as prone to being steered by vehicle slipstreams and crosswinds. Lots of tint, height, and width options, I believe. A cheap fix that may help is putting a couple of Vetter Snap Vents in the windshield to equalize pressure behind the shield. I think a pair of them are only $43 on the Craig Vetter site. In the bargain they greatly reduce buffeting...

I've got one too.  It replaced a damaged superb Plexi 3 which is no longer available to fit the EV.  I was so frustrated with the Plexi 2, I almost got another Plexi 3 and was going to alter it with a saw and a hairdryer.

I finally got the Plexi 2 dialed in.

1.  Raise it as high as you can.  The headlight opening should be above the bottom of the instruments.

2.  Sweep it back was far as you can where the top is as close to your helmet as possible.

This should make it tolerable, even acceptable.

try it.  tell me how it works.

I fitted a couple of those Vetter vents to my EV's stock windscreen. Couldn't detect a difference.
Screen is now permanently removed from the bike. For winter I fit the fairing sans screen. That helps a lot with keeping wind off your middle

Hi,

Thanks for the photos and have been adjusting in this morning. If possible could you please send a side view of the bike w/ windshield? I want to see how much angle you have.

thanks!

I just snapped this in my garage.

the bottom of the windshield is above the bottom of the instruments and the top is angled over the middle of the gas tank.  It's an improvement. I won't say perfect.

I have mine angled the same but set lower.  The difference may be the height of the rider.

actually I raised mine for an air gap over the headlight and under the instruments.  The idea was to make a vent to minimize turbulence.

I angled the top back so I could look over the windshield.  Then I discovered the closer the windshield was to my helmet, the better the air flow.

This was a recent post relative to adding lowers to improve the buffeting.

You should see what Ratguzzi does to his windscreens to reduce buffeting.

Here is a video I took from behind it. How quiet it is when the camera is behind it and how loud it gets outside of the edges.
It is extremely pleasant going down the road. I wish some of you would ride the bike and I bet you'd be amazed how well it works.

When you are sitting on the bike where is the top of the screen in relationship to your head?

Hi,

thanks to everyone who replied to this thread...what a great community we have here! In the end I had to mount the shield above the instruments and raked it back 50 degrees. I also have a Laminar Lip coming in for a universal shield and hope this will deflect all of the wind over my head. Right now I'm quite good and can ride 65-70 mph with no buffering and face shield in the open position.

Thanks, Brian

I get really tired of attempting to get pictures on here, its to frustrating. One time it happens and the next it won't and I do exactly as the instructions dictate. :(

More or less in the same boat I believe. I had to mount the shield higher to get the wind above my head. I'm 6' w/ a 30" inseam and also using a Corbin saddle which is taller than stock. Also I had to keep playing with the angle of the shield as any less than 50 degree rake would make the bike handle weird.

I think mine is a high as I can get it too, then angled back.

let me know how the laminar lip works.

Played with the Laminar Lip today...For the most part it works but mainly I needed 1-2 inches of windshield height to deflect wind over my helmet. I can ride 70mph with my helmet shield in the fully up position.

I recently put a set of Harley Crome fork lowers on my calvin and they look and work great. They keep all the wind buffering off the upper body and head. I have attempted to send Pictures but can't get them to go through on this site.

I have a goldwing vent added to the windshield. Might help, but with the cal. package it's a much different shape than yours.

Is this the last word?

Or are you still going to replace the windshield?

This is interesting. How well does it work? Could it/should it be mounted lower?
