Can anyone speculate on why my friends 72 Eldorado jumps out of top gear ?

Usually that's caused by worn gears.   New gears need to fix it.

Could be something as simple as a linkage issue, or something more serious like rounded off engagement "dogs" on the gear and sliding sleeve or a bent or worn shift fork.

Charlie's onto it but jumping out of top is rare, worn dogs on 5th so very unlikely, linkage or selector problem IMHO, obviously look at linkage first.

Worn gear teeth whine like billyho, but don't jump out, it's the dogs that hold engagement, teeth just drive (or break & go bang)

This. Worn 5th gears only started being a problem in the early 2000's when the box was being asked to do much more than it was designed for. Early ones are generally well up to the task.

If it's 'Jumping Out' it's most likely because it isn't 'Going in'. Pawl adjustment, linkage adjustment or as a last resort drum shimming, (Although this is usually irrelevant for 5th.) would be on mt shit list.
