Battery for 850T
« on: December 26, 2016, 10:10:26 PM »
I have found three batteries at Tractor Supply but not sure of the best size. They are Husky batteries with different cold cranking amps. I was told by the sales person that the cold cranking amps is what really matters and said his guess would be anything over 300 for what I told him I had would be good. They have a 280 CCA for $31, 360 CCA for $37 and 420 CCA for 44. Physical size wise they will all fit the bike. If I am off the mark completely, let me know.

Thank you in advance,

Because the alternator is marginal, you're better off with the largest capacity battery you can put in there. That said, I use lawn tractor batteries usually rated around 320cca.

They would all operate the but the larger ones will keep cranking longer, the bike will be able to charge any of them.
I would go with the largest one to fit without modifying the battery box.

Buy whichever one is a sealed/"maintenance-free" type. If none is, then buy somewhere else.

I get 4-5 years out of a rider mower battery of at least 300 CCA amps on my 949cc CX100 or Convert.  What you have found sounds more than adequate.  Just make sure the bike cables meet the terminals + & - in length.

Do yourself a huge favour and spread a little Vaseline on the terminals of your new battery before bolting the lugs to it.
I learned that 50 years ago as an apprentice working on large traction batteries.

Agreed on getting a SLA type battery. 330 CCA seemed plenty for Eldo, 850T and T3.

This is what I used. I prefer the AGM on things that vibrate... like motorcycles.

I had to shim it a little as it's smaller than the the stock battery.

The batteries I first asked about are not sealed. I just picked up a sealed garden battery with 350 cc Amps. Fits just right. Need to finish some other items before I try and start it again. I am sure it will be fine. Thanks again!

That's what I use too, except the (US made) Deka/Big Crank ETX30L.

It is from Farm & Fleet. F&F L&G Battery U1R425CA is what receipt says. $42.99 minus $10.00 core = $35.88 with tax. I am sure it's rebranded but I can't tell from whom. Looks like it has a 12 month replacement free replacement period. Pic from their web site. Mine looks slightly different.
