Any decent tasting decaf coffee out there? (NGC)
« on: March 13, 2017, 02:00:43 PM »
Hello Folks , I am looking for a decaf coffee that doesnt taste like decaf, and is readily available. I dont grind my own beans, so am looking for something that comes roasted, and ground. I like a rich, bold coffee..... any recommendations... what do you all suggest?
Thanks .

I too like a bold rich decaf. Believe it or not, I found Starbucks has a dark roast decaf that tastes pretty good. I found it at the local Publix grocery store.

We used to be spoiled.  There was a little coffee shop in town (Alb) that had decaf Sumatra beans and would grind them for us.  Excellent stuff.

Now days we just use whatever we can find at the grocery store.  Choices of decaf on the shelves are limited.  We try to find a breakfast blend but have had to pick up folgers at times.

The good part is our local breakfast place has a Sumatra decaf that is really good.

At Starbucks the available decaf is usually 'burnt' from being on the hot plate for so many hours.  If we are stuck getting coffee there we get a pour over decaf.

I just wonder if there is something left from the test of coffee after:

"Beans are steamed for about 30 minutes in order to open their pores. Once the coffee beans are receptive to a solvent, they are repeatedly rinsed with either methylene chloride or ethyl acetate for about 10 hours to remove the caffeine."

If you ask me I take my coffee with caffeine instead of methylene chloride or ethyl acetate :) and sure it tastes better.

We enjoy Melitta decaf coffee. Its inexpensive and tasty. Better if done in a French press but decent in a drip machine.

First things first: Ho do you brew? The flavor of any coffee depends heavily on the brewing process, water temperature and the brewing speed.

If you use a Keurig-style coffee machine, and even  fill your own capsules, you'll often be disappointed. They don't get the water hot enough and the brewing cycle is too short. It's a compromise that delivers fast coffee, but not great coffee. Creates a lot of waste, too, and has a relatively high per-cup cost.

If you use a drip machine you'll have better luck because they at least brew longer, if not hotter.

A French press lets you control both initial water temperature and brewing time. A bit fussy on clean-up though.

Plenty of other alternatives to all this, but what you want is a process that heats the water to a bit over 200 F and brews for 4-5 minutes. Some of the above machines may have adjustments for brew strength (usually by increasing brew time) and water temperature.

After you get the process squared away, you can start thinking about what kind of coffee to use. For opinions on that, see above.

Coffee isn't just a morning drink. Sometimes after diner I like a cup of coffee with desert and don' t want to be up all night so inject decaf.

I often enjoy 10 cups a day.  If I had that much caffeine I could sell the bikes and run everywhere!
If there's no good source nearby the internet is your friend.  Everybody ships nowadays.

There's a guy over on ADV Rider who roast coffee for sale-Crazy Fox Coffee in (I think) the DC area.  Not bad at all.
My wife and I both like the Peat's as it's all fresh and they offer beans from all over the world at a reasonable price.

We used to go to Peets (pretty sure you mean Peets rather than Peats KoF) Coffee in Menlo Park when we were kids, parents used to go and get it in Berkeley when we lived there in the 60's.  It was always a treat as they always had Sumatra and Major Dickinson's readily brewed and the place smelled heavenly.

My Dad used to get a rise out of the ladies working the counter and ask for 2 cups:  1 Major Dick and 1 Kama Sutra - the ladies would always take him seriously and try to correct him:  Sir...It's Sumaaaaatraaaa, not Kama Sutra sir!!  My dad would just chuckle and order it again!

Thanks Folks, for the excellent suggestions and recommendations! My wife is the  serious coffee lover in the family, but has had issues with urinary frequency and urgency, so it was recommended she go to decaf. She drinks about 8-9 cups a day, and so far having switched to the Kirkland signature green can decaf, from Costco  , has helped tremendously.  We use a Mr Coffee type drip machine, but  she misses the taste of the real deal. I cant taste the difference myself, but my tongue has taken a beating from radiation treatments, so that is expected. I am going to try some of the brands recommended here and see how they are. I think making it a bit on the strong side helps too. Thanks again!

Putting together a few comments from above and adding my own experience:

We shopped for a drip machine with the highest wattage rating -- yielding hotter brewing temp.  We settled on a Cuisinart 14 cup machine.  Once brewed, we put it into an insulated carafe so that the pot doesn't sit on a hotplate too long.

If you want dark and rich, try Starbucks Decaf Sumatra.  Available whole or ground fresh at Starbucks.

For a medium roast, we find that Coscto house blend (roasted by Starbucks) is our favorite.  This only comes whole bean, however.

We bought a burr grinder and grind only enough coffee for the current pot.

Once we got the equipment right, we could fine tune the amount of coffee to add to the pot.

And when we feel like taking the time, we have a Francis Francis (Lily) espresso maker, and  Bialetti moka coffee maker.  The Sumatra is great in the espresso machines.

Best,

Carlo

The Bialetti Moka is an iconic, ultra-low-tech device that has been a staple of most Italian households for decades.  It produces a smooth, rich espresso that is 90% equivalent to what a $2000 espresso maker can do (water doesn't get quite as hot since the Moka is not pressurized).  I've used one for years and wouldn't change to any other method.  Lavazza Qualita Rossa is the perfect grind and partner for the Moka, along with the green can of Lavazza Decaf Espresso.  Both available cheaply from Amazon, as well as the Moka.  Simple, elemental espresso making - very satisfying for a coffee lover.  Dilute with hot milk for a cafe au lait, French-style, or water if you like American coffee.  It doesn't get any more basic - or much better.

You mean some here actually care what their caffeine laced coffee actually tastes like?  I drink coffee or cola for 1 thing, caffeine to wake me up.  As long as it's isn't too sweet or strong I'm happy.  :thumb:

In my opinion 9-10 cups a day of any coffee is excessive...I would think 3 cups of quality natural caffeinated would be much better in the long run...

We drink somewhat expensive organic coffee bought at Wegman's supermarkets....Gri nd it fresh every day, my wife and I each drink about three 8 ounce cups in morning. It is not decaffinated...When we have coffee eating out or other people's homes, it's very noticeable the coffee we have at home has less caffeine ...

I have a bialetti Moka that is over 20 years old, I used to make some great espresso in it when we had a gas stove, I am not sure they work on a glass top electric stove.....does anyone here have any experience with that?  I will have to try some Lavazza decaf in it.
Thanks,
Rick.
