Bands that shoulda done better
« on: March 15, 2017, 10:29:27 PM »
OK, here's one where not only are there no wrong answers, but where everyone can learn something new!

When I was thinking about the posts in the other recent music threads, I kept thinking about bands or performers that should have done better - I knew them, I loved them, but if I mentioned them the answer would be a universal "WHO?!?"

So I invite you to chime in with your favorite bands that few if any of us will know, but that might inspire us to check out something we haven't heard or haven't heard lately. I'd suggest that where you can, you say a bit about the style or background of your selection, if they have any tie to something or someone we might know, etc.

Here's a few of mine to start:
  • Audience - British, sort of Prog Rock, late 60s and early 70s
  • Renaissance - British, orchestral rock, very literate in their lyrics, one of the best three female vocalists of all time (4 1/2  octaves range!!!)
  • CANO - Canadian, le Cooperatif des Artistes de Nord-Ontario, a hippie outgrowth folk-rock band that influenced many other Canadian bands for decades to come
  • Ian Thomas - Canadian, brother to comedian Dave Thomas (yes, we're still invading!), mainstream rock/pop-rock, covered by major bands such as Santana and Manfred Mann's Earth Band
  • Leo Kottke - American, folkie/blues influenced, a voice "like geese farts on a muggy day"; his style is a schizoid blend of Leon Russell Okie and the woods of Minnesota

I have more, but that's enough to get started!

The Cate Brothers from Arkansas . Long career , several albums , absolutely one of the greatest live bands ever , almost unknown outside of our area . In about 1984 the Stones wanted the Cate Bros to tour Europe with them . The Cates said "no , we're on vacation"

About Leo Kotke , he grew up here in Muskogee , so yeah , he sounds like an Okie

Oh , one more , Steve Pryor and the Mighty Kingsnakes .

Actually, I knew the GAP band - and didn't recognize Thackery.

Others I knew were Rundgren (duh!), Tommy Castro (heard of but never heard), and Bonoff (I had a crush on her back when).

I can't see or hear Leo Kottke's name without being reminded of the Garrison Keillor groaner pun when he introduced him on his program:

"He's from a famous American musical family, his ancestor is Francis Kottke" (you have to say it out loud it to understand it).

The best bar band in the land.  Used to go every time they were at the Vogue in Indy, saw them in NC, and bikeweek at Daytona beach. High energy, always good, never made it big. Last saw them again in Indy at the Slippery Noodle about 4-5 years ago.

Went to the Slippery Noodle for the first time to see The Stella Vees last October.  Cool place to see live music. Came down from Chicago just to see them and check out the venue. Stella Vees is a Chicago style blues band out of I believe Lexington Ky. Seen them at Hot  Augest Blues fest  on Ky. Lake a few years ago. 😎🎼
