850-T Turnsignal/Horn/Lights Switch
« on: March 24, 2017, 01:49:48 PM »

https://www.harpermoto.com/t-s-horn-switch-17750301.html

Harpers has some of the original switches still available. The crappy Yamaha one on my bike needs to go away.

I was thinking of either getting the original T style one, which I assume will crap out in a couple years or get the later one from MG Cycle.

http://www.mgcycle.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=4352&zenid=f2df6869df6ef36fc2627b34b0d03249

I'm obviously ok with not staying original.

Thoughts?

Since you're not worried about keeping it stock I would recommend the K&S or similar. Much improved over original.

I have had a K&S on my Eldo for 14 years.  No issues, would buy again but don't have to!

How do you order the K & S stuff? You have to find a dealer? I can just get switches off of eBay and they would be better than the stock one. For some silly reason I want to keep a Guzzi switch on it.

It has a Yamaha switch on it now (that looks like ones on TOT but doesn't actually match up to the wiring, someone has hacked the wiring)

Any experience with the later MG switch shown? Are they also as useless as the original ones?

Dave, I've never had a problem with the left hand switch, still have the originals on all .
Now the start /kill switch is a different story. I've had to replace two of them. Opted for the one offered by MG.

Yeah, my starter switch won't last long so I've also been looking for something there too. Including modifying the key switch to also start the bike, if that's possible.

If I could get the Yamaha switch sorted it might work but the wiring doesn't match anything I've found. While it looks like the ones on ToT the wiring doesn't match.

I've used the K&S switches on my T for years, and used them on the Triumph when I rebuilt it.  Lots of sources -- mgcycle, amazon, ebay etc.

I installed K&S switches on my T last year.  Greg Bender shortened the wires and installed molex connectors for me.  I also used his subharness and relay setup.  It's amazing how good it all works now!

My favorite so far. Have used K&S, generic CEV, Yamaha pot metal ones. All work fine, but the LM 5/ CAL3 SP3 types are my favorites. Here is a used one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Moto-Guzzi-LM5-handlebar-switch-for-lights-indicators-etc-from-LH-bar-/182467325820?hash=item2a7be66f7c:g:L8sAAOSwo4pYghU4&vxp A pic of a new one http://www.stein-dinse.biz/images/product_images/popup_images/27738015-z.jpg Note: US versions as some currently on EBAY, don't have the  "Lights off " option.

The LM5 ones are pretty nondescript. But I'm sure they are good switches. I believe Ducati went to Nippon Denso at some point. Did Guzzi do the same?

I'd like to find a Euro spec switch for the Mille -- so I could turn off the headlamp for starting and idling. Could put in a K&S but don't want to splice into the good wiring harness.

You don't have to, just replace the pins. A good electric / electronics supply will have them. Harpers has new connectorswith pins. Radio shack has the pin tool.

I'm sure Greg Bender could make you an "adapter" that is "plug and play". I'll be getting this one for my Convert:

Or he can supply the necessary Molex bits to do as MM says. An old section of brake line works great as a tool to remove the male pins.

Getting the right crimper makes a huge difference. If you get a simpler one like below just take your time and you can crimp away.

The one that I posted the link for is a Euro type (headlamp off option)
