Sometimes its the simple things
« on: May 26, 2017, 05:02:56 PM »
Last month I discovered that the left Delorto PHF 36 carb was leaking past the float, when the pet cock is on. Had this same issue with the right side just after I got this Le Mans in 2012, which turned out to be a bad needle valve. So, same symptoms, I ordered a new needle valve, float and bowl gasket from our friends at MG Cycle.
When the parts arrived in a day or two, I pulled the left carb, and set about installing the new valve, float and gasket. While I had the carb off, I cleaned all the jets, and pulled the petcocks, which had very little gunk in them. Buttoned everything up, and took it for a ride. Only went a short distance since we were due for rain, but it appeared that everything was OK. Last weekend, I went for a longer ride, left cylinder barely fired. Got it home, and started over my previous work. Initially, could not find what was wrong, but the left float was not filling with fuel. Went back over everything that I had done, checked and rechecked.
Finally, after being completely flustered by this, I found the culprit. After pulling everything apart , I saw that one of the rubber inlet fuel lines had gotten kinked, most likely when I had done the original work. New piece of hose, and problem solved.

Precisely my thoughts too Dusty. Methinks a good sparkplug thread would be appropriate for the long weekend......NGK?? E3?? Champion??

Well, I had thought about spark, and did check that. Spark is good.

I fear it's something more serious - a leaky valve or worn rings. Time for a teardown!

Ok.  I got an opinion here.  After a career as a mechanic and after changing plugs ad nauseum, I am 100% in favor of good sparkplug threads.

Thanks for listening.  I feel better now.

The more I think about this , maybe pulling the heads for a look see wouldn't hurt , since it seems the group believes the sparking plugs need changing

The firing intervals are up shit creek. Should be 180 degrees ( apparently) :embarrassed:

Yep, uneven amounts of fork oil, happened to a friend of mine one time in the middle of nowhere.
