Picked up a sheet metal screw yesterday. I was lucky my F800ST has a TPMS read out, watched the rear tire go from 37-20 while I slowly made it to the nearest town 5 miles away. Once there, looking stranded at a gas station a nice guy in a Chevy Club Cab asked me what was wrong, and offered me a tire auger and a plug. Presto, fixo, made it the 50 miles back to my house. No tow, and no accident, all in all, a very good day. The tire is a Michelin Pilot Road 4. The puncture was about an inch off the center of the tread. Of course, the tire only has 1k on it? Replace, or try to find someone who will put a rubber plug with cement and a patch on the inside. New tire to match the front about $200. What say you wise Guzzi folks?

Ride it....and monitor the pressure.

If you have the dough, shop around and find a new one on sale and save it back until you've ridden the repaired tire down to replacement tread OR it will no longer hold air reliably OR you're gearing up for a long, long trip, then swap...YMMV

I would continue riding with it. Like Peter says, monitor the air pressure. Doubt you'll have a problem.

The normal fibre & cement plugs seem to eject themselves quickly with high speed riding. The mushroom plugs work better, but even these try to escape the hole and leak, so you would have to avoid spirited riding. Where's the fun in that. Replace the tyre.

This ^^. How does a mushroom plug "escape"? The ones I've used had a head ~ 1.5" in diameter, goes in the hole from the inside and is glued in place, with air pressure against it.

Don't mess with it unless it leaks. If so, replace the tire. I've never been able to fix a bad repair.

I recommend that riders carry Stop and Go plug kit.

Run it around town and short rides. Any trip involving prolonged speeds and heat built up such as Summer touring replace it before your trip.

If it's an H rated tire good for 130 mph, keep it to the lower rating and don't ride over 124 mph.

Beats me. But I've seen it happen. My neice bought a CB500 with 8,000km on it. A few months later she got a slow leak. The stem of a mushroom plug was protruding some 3-5mm out into the air. Bit the bullet & replaced the tyre (a few days before she left on a 6,000km trip).

On the other hand, I've a mate with a 1200GS, ended up with dozens of the Stop n Go mushrooms in a tyre on a ride through Eastern Europe, Turkey & the Sahara. Lasted till the tread wore out. I'd guess new tyres would be hard to find in the Sahara, so not a lot of choice.

Im- have you checked with the location you purchased the tire for a road hazard warranty? I thought the Michelin tires had some type of road hazard warranty when you purchased them?

Everybody is going to tell you the safest thing is to replace it and that is correct. However, if you are going to try to get full use out of the tire the correct way is 1:demount the tire and closely inspect for cord damage or hidden tears. 2: Put on a hot patch from the inside. I've seen it done dozens of times on commercial tires with no failures. Plugs installed from the outside are intended for temporary get home repairs. Going beyond that is pressing your luck. My dos centavos.

Plug/patch combo is the best way. Carquest has them. Don't be stingy on the glue. That seems to be the biggest problem on plug repairs.

"Gooey string" plug. Used them a number of times in motorcycle and car tires. Keep going until you wear it out. The exotic plugs are less reliable IMHO.

Put about eight or twelve tubes of kitchen caulking inside the tire, thereby developing a solid rubber tire like our first bicycles had - at least mine did.

I have 2 patches in my rear tire. Take it off and take to Discount Tire and they will put a patch on the inside of a tubeless tire for FREE. Or at least they did for me 2 tires.

According to car tire manufacturers - ANY type of tire repair then limits the tires max speed to 55mph. Sounded stupid to me , but that was the official word. Probably just a disclaimer.

I keep a plug kit with all of my bikes (well, the tubeless one's anyway) in case of a flat. Plugging a tire is typically pretty straight forward and assuming you have air to blow it back up you are good to go. In a car or on a low pressure tire like a tractor I leave it at that as long as it's holding air. Motorcycles tho are different. There you have high speeds, small contact patches, and much greater stresses (why bike tires rarely if ever go beyond 10,000 miles while that would be absurdly low for say a car). If a bike tire fails it can be catastrophic, not just inconvenient. Thus I may hobble along on a patched bike tire but as soon as I can, it gets replaced. If you've ever lost a tire at speed, you'd under stand why. Stuff happens but that's no reason to poke the bear.
