George Clooney cycle crash....was he on a Guzzi?
« on: July 10, 2018, 08:30:47 AM »
Just read that George Clooney was "...hit on his motorbike..." on his way to a film set in Italy. He lives on the shores of Lake Como, not far from the Guzzi headquarters.

I love the Euro use of the term "motorbike", it makes them all sound like mopeds.

Wonder if he was on a Guzzi?

I glanced at an article on it this morning. If the photo shown was accurate it looked like a Scooter (maybe Vespa) wasn't clear.

It's funny how riders are more interested in the type of bike and such rather than the condition of the rider. From the looks of the photo it didn't look too serious, but anytime you go down, especially us old guys, things break that didn't used to. Hope he and the bike are OK!

He was treated at the hospital with minor injuries to pelvis and one arm and leg, then released. Already in a limo home.

I suspect most who see the headline knew he was ok because the headline was that he crashed not that he was badly injured, dying, or dead.

And at the same time, probably dozens seriously injured or killed in similar accidents but no one cares because it's not a celebrity...

I hear this a lot too, especially with shyte on FB, like we're supposed to be shamed for giving a crap about a celebrity and not about people we don't know.

But it's basic human nature. We FEEL like we know celebrities - because we literally know their names, their faces, and usually some of their work (which when it's entertainment means we connect with something about them - just like people do about artists, authors, hell politicians for right or wrong, or how about Evel Knievel etc.).

So really there's nothing wrong with giving a crap BECAUSE they are not at the same level of nameless strangers. Granted they're not much more... but it's something more and that's normal, not something to bitch about.

Look, the world's a big place, and I'm sure a lot of people will die today that I don't or won't ever know and I'm not going to likely mourn the normal course of life for the nameless masses.

But at the same time things happen and the world's attention gets drawn to the fate of a few and you get emotionally invested. There's a piece of me that was VERY happy inside when I heard those 12 kids and their coach got out of the caves alive in Thailand today. Well done Thai Navy Seals (RIP the one they lost) and well done the professionals and volunteers from all over the world. I think it was some Brit divers who found them in the first place. Cheers mates! You guys all have balls the size of church bells! Sleep well tonight!

That's all very true, and even if we try not to fall into the trap of celebrity worship, no one can deny feeling differently when Olivia DeHavilland passes away from when Betty Jean Dodgeford of Utica, NY passes away, even if they both ARE 102-year-old nice ladies.

But I do make a concerted effort not to participate in any of the Dead Rock Star posts on any of the forums I frequent.   Given the average age of this list versus the average age (and the usual s,d, and r&r lifestyles) of rock stars, it won't be long before one will be passing on every single day .... we could fill up the entire forum with eulogies.

Shame? No, I actually don't know any famous celebrities and for the most part don't read about them...However, all the boys and the coach are now rescued from the cavern..And one driver  who took the risk did die in the attempt to save others...That to me is a better story than Clooney getting in a minor accident... But if ti were you, Kev, I would be interested

He had a crash in California a few years back , some journalist asked if he was gonna quit riding , he stated flatly that motorcycles are his primary form of transportation , so "no" he wasn't going to stop.

I'm not saying you are necessarily trying to shame anyone. I'm just pointing out that's the tone a lot of people who say the same thing (questioning why we seemingly express care about one and not the other) seem to take.

But if ti were you, Kev, I would be interested

I've talked to fellow forum members at NARs that don't post here because the feel that nobody pays a bit of attention or cares about, or responds to their posts.

I never thought about it but fact? is the human condition seems to require some acknowledgment of a persons contributions to the group.

I tell them that some are just uh...wordy and like to explain things. I am guilty of that for things that fly.

No matter how you cut it this and most likely (this is the only forum I go to) other forums are a bit "cliquey"

That's face it 20,000 posts has got to be close to 5,000 hours of sitting infront of a computer screen!!

Just say'n

Interesting calculation.   Although when I figure that in the time since I've joined Wild Guzzi, I've spent about 438 hours standing patiently waiting to finish peeing, it sort of puts it all in perspective .... and 5,000 hours posting doesn't seem like long ....

5,000 was a conservative estimate based on 15 min per post.
208 days!

How's that conservative? I just clicked over here and posted this in about 30 seconds.

But I sit in front of a computer for sometimes 8+ hours a day for work....

Well, kirby's calculation made me think about that.   I took typing class in high school (because my showing up made the class 15 girls and 1 boy), spent thousands of hours coding on everything from an IBM 026 card punch to a VT-220 on a DEC -, and as a result I can type as fast as just about anyone.    This post here (reading yours, typing mine) will take about 4 minutes, which is average for a post for me.

So 23,000 posts in 10 years = 2300 posts a year or about 7+ per day, so maybe 30 - 45 minutes a day posting.   So more like 1500 hours in 10 years.    I know people my age who watch that much TV in a year, let alone 10, and I haven't had a TV in 30 years .....

"I took typing class in high school (because my showing up made the class 15 girls and 1 boy)..."

I took the same route because I didn't want to take auto shop class and who doesn't want to be the only boy in a class full of girls?  I parked my ass in there for an entire year and it was one of my favorite classes!

Exactly!  Typing was one of the "Home Economics" sort of thing that girls did.   Some of the boys gave me a hard time about it until they realized what the deal was.

I don't know why no one else figured that out, it wasn't like I was the stud hoss of my high school class or anything ....

Ha!
But here's the thing, its not just the typing its how long do you sit in front of the screen WITHOUT typing..if you do.

I timed my usage and once I'm logged on I stay about 15 min average and 85% of the time I  post.

If you make your living sitting in front of a screen...my condolences..no offence intended.

I hear this a lot too, especially with shyte on FB, like we're supposed to be shamed for giving a crap about a celebrity and not about people we don't know.

But it's basic human nature. A major part of me wanted to miss spell that carburettor name very slightly in the interests of childish toilet humour since we're touching obliquely on the needs of his missus, but Dusty WOULD kill me..
But jeez it would be understandable if I did, after all, the first consonant in that name only has to be one letter further on in the alphabet and....

Not a very "classy" Mercedes IMO. Just a W210 E-Class (1996-2002). They go for cheap here in the US.

AMAL , as in carburetors is properly pronounced like canal , being noting more than the first two syllables from the word "amalgamated" , so the joke doesn't really work .
