Can't get a price
« on: July 28, 2018, 09:42:02 AM »
Walked into my local Guzzi dealer.
It's a one-salesman shop.  It appears THAT salesman has "moved on"

New saleslady.
There was some question about how I could be helped - so I introduced myself and stated that I had purchased two bikes there this year.  I added that I've been reading that Moto Guzzi is providing some great incentives on the 2017 models.

So I ask "what are you getting on the 2017 Stones".

- "Which one?  Do you have a particular color in mind?"
"No, just in general"
- "Well, I can't give you a price unless you select a particular bike and are serious about buying it today"
"How do I know if I'm serious about buying one, if I don't know the price?"
- "I'm sorry sir, but I really can't give you a price unless you're seriously buying"

I asked the Wife if she was ready to go.  "yes".  So, we politely left.

With that kind of attitude, they'll be going out of business soon. If you are patient, you may get a great deal.

She should have been able to say "If you buy it now, cash, it'll be $7,234 out the door".

Warning, though.   If she DOES say that, then she shouldn't have to listen to any wannabe BS (not from you, of course, but the average customer) like "Well, what's your best price?"  or "What if I trade in my Kawasaki Ninja, can you give me $4,000 for it off that price?"  or "Can you hold it for me until next week?"

What drove her to her waffling answer was a parade of waffling customers that aren't at all interested in buying a bike at the market price.

I agree that there's not going to be many bikes sold the way she's doing it ....

My humble solution for people of that mindset is to find a copy of Og Mandino's Greatest Salesman in the World and give it to them and explain that their current path of salesmanship needs improvement. Happy reading and continued self improvement.

I thought you were supposed to subtly set the hook and then pull, not push before the hook is in place.

maybe they have gone boutique at that shop and are pricing by color, not model?

I traded my Ducati on an Aprilia, I asked how much change over? Bloke gave me a price almost equal to stamp duty & rego so I held out my hand and said sold. I’m guessing he didn’t think I was serious.

I feel your pain, as I had a similar experience last time I purchased a new car.

I have never purchased a NEW bike, only gently used so I am wondering how much flexibility is there when buying a new MG?  When looking at their ads, they all quote the list price and I am aware that every dealer has their own bottom line, just wondering is there an average % that one can expect to pay below the list price?

I look at Cycletrader to get an idea of what dealers can potentially sell bikes for.  There are usually some dealers "making deals" to give you an idea.  Having said that, I tend to not press too hard.  I do want dealers to stay in business and I don't think any of them get rich off new bikes.

Having said that, I don't think much of that sales experience.  How hard is it to answer those questions?  Even if they are discounting a particular bike for some reason it's easy to say "The Stones are listed for $x but we have a special deal on this one here..."  Whether you're serious about buying or not, that question is answerable.

I own my own business. I sell Furnaces and Air Conditioners. I tell people over the phone what the price should be. (it could be a little more depending on what I see when I go out to their house). Many of my competitors will not even talk about price until they have been in the customer's house for a hour.
Hey if you need to know what things cost, I just helped you without having to make a trip out to your house. If you are ready to buy, you will tell me.
Most people want to know what it costs, then they will make a decision. Even if they have lots of money.

This is the response that would get my adrenaline up. She has already made a judgement, that you may not be a" serious buyer"

"

- "Well, I can't give you a price unless you select a particular bike and are serious about buying it today"
"How do I know if I'm serious about buying one, if I don't know the price?"
- "I'm sorry sir, but I really can't give you a price unless you're seriously buying.

Yep. Unfortunately , the owner was nowhere to be found

The saleslady did tell me that they were offering substantial discounts to move the 2017 inventory, so it puzzled me a bit when I couldn't have the prices.

This is basically why I ended up buying online. Buying from the "local" dealer (400 mi away) was more expensive and more hassle than buying from a dealer thousands of miles away and having the bike shipped.

Yesterday I talked to a former Guzzi dealer who has a 2011 Stelvio demo that I'm interested in. Over the phone he wouldn't give me a price and the times I've been there in person he wouldn't tell me what he would sell one of his new leftovers for. He said I should tell him what it's worth. That's ok but I hadn't done any research and don't have a clue but I will when I go to look at it in person. I think that cuts out a spur of the moment sale, and there is no target to start at. I won't try to lowball over the phone but it would be helpful to know what range he has in mind. When I go to look at it I should have cash in hand, maybe that would get a good price for me.

FT is a restoration shop that sells Guzzi and Royal Enfield on the side.
Never visited them. Wish Donelson was still the local dealer but Aprillia pretty much gave them the cold shoulder and given the difficulties in dealing with them Carl told em they werent worth the trouble and to pound sand.

I had the same thing happen to me at the local Yamaha store looking at the new 900 Tracer.

He said they'd come off retail ($13k) but not take a 10 year old bike in trade.  Then he made some remark about selling it for $9.5k and then saying he was only joking.  I walked out at that point.  Yes, I'll admit I was kicking tires.

-bought a sim free mobile phone for my daughter and the young sales lady said "you don't want no insurance cover for your phone?"  . With a straight face, I said "you know, that's a double negative" .  She then replied "I'm dyslexic, you shouldn't make fun of dyslexic people, it's not funny".  Before I could explain that I'm dyslexic myself and wasn't making fun of her, she snubbed me and moved on to the next customer

Buying off the internet has killed or is killing our local shops quickly!

Price transparency is easily available online with little effort required.

I've always tried supporting my local shops and community; however, it's frustrating when your local shop "Never" has what you need in-stock, insists on a deposit to order an OEM part and then orders the part from a regional warehouse, often resulting in a further delay, then charges you a premium price for the experience.  You also get the added convenience of getting to drive back to the shop a second time to pickup your order days after they received it and finally got around to calling you.

So I've given up. My fingers work as good on a keyboard as the parts guys, I can call to doublecheck availability, price and delivery time; and, yep, it's delivered quicker to my doorstep at a significantly lower price.

That is a shame.  Do I recall correctly that it was a fellow from Flying Tiger who shared his first Guzzi rally experience with us here?  I know that when we were visiting family in St. Louis I stopped in, & they seemed very much into the marque & making a go of it with Guzzi.  That was a year or so ago, maybe the one who was driving that was the chap who moved on.....

Personally, color would be about the last thing I would base my decision on when selecting a motorcycle for purchase....
