What size socket needed
« on: October 15, 2018, 07:45:32 AM »
Hey guys, a while back Pete made us aware of the dry swingarm bearing issue with the 1400 models. It takes a special tool to remove the nut holding the swingarm which can be made from a socket. What size socket was that? When I change the rear tire feel the need to check the bearings as Pete recommended.

If it's anything like the earlier CARC bikes it's not very tight but has a couple of pinch bolts.

I think this is different Roy. It's a specialized socket which can be made from a standard socket. I just can't remember what size

I made mine with a spare 30mm socket. I can loan it to you when you need it. There are pinch bolts as well.

It looks very similar to me. I just used a pair of pliers on mine but a socket is nicer.

There is a special tool available for the CARC bikes, not necessarily fitting the 1400:

The same source shows another castle nut tool. The first one works as advertised.

Pinch bolts and pre load bushing are only torqued to 10 NM, so any c spanner would work. Swing arm pivot is tightened to 60 NM. The castellated socket does make it easier to torque to spec, however I think pre loading these bearings by feel is an acceptable  way to go.
