Thinking about a 2017 Stelvio...

Greetings. I have a problem. I keep looking at new 2017 Stelvio NTXs that are sitting in dealers near me.

The prices are dropping - perhaps in anticipation of the V85.

I am seriously thinking about buying an NTX. A green one. Which I have already sat on...  It would replace my Ducati ST3 as commuter and long-haul bike.

Any advice or counsel would be appreciated.

Or does anybody have a low-mile Stelvio NTX they'd be wiling to part with? Anybody want a nice ST3?

Usual things with a CARC bike. The swingarm bearings and shock linkage bearings will need greasing, (Super easy on a Stelvio.) tune it properly. Go have fun.

The Stelvio is a great do it all machine.I replaced my sport tourer(Aprilia Futura) with a Stelvio a couple yrs. ago.The seating position is much better for my old wreaked shoulders and neck and it's just plain fun to ride. Go for it!

I'm also assuming the factory was constantly out of grease - and I don't mind addressing that.

And there is some issue with wiring the auxiliary lights (will get into details if I actually get the bike).

Also thinking about having the tank sealed before taking delivery. Isn't there some risk of the tank swelling due our high ethanol fuel in California?

Does anyone happen to know if the side cases can fit a full helmet?

But overall, the attraction is a new, all-around capable bike to replace my sport-tourer - like Bigtime did. And a bike that I could load a bunch of stuff on so I can do some business travel on it instead of short flights. I have rented a few BMW GSs, which I enjoyed. I think I would enjoy the Stelvio even more.

Since you are in Carlsbad I assume you've seen the one at GP for $11990. Yes 4v, no tappet issues. Helmets won't fit in cases and no need to seal tank. mines got 41k miles on So Ca gas and no issues.

Second what Cage said. Stock side bags are 37L I thank but 45L are available( pricey though).

I put about 40K miles on a ST2, basically the same riding position as the ST3.  My Stelvio NTX was a much better machine for trips, more comfortable riding position, 8 gal tank, equal brakes, more suspension travel, and so much easier to maintain.  I would have the tank lined.  Mine was starting to swell after about 4 years with ethanol fuel.  Also, do not tighten the screws that hold those plastic winglets to the tank.  In fact, take the darn winglets off and put them in a box just to make sure nobody else gets the idea to tighten the bolts.

I have been active on this site for a number of years and posted probably more than a lot of you would like to see!

Many of my posts were related to my life with a 2012, first-year, Stelvio NTX.  The posts often focus on "how-to," DIY fixes or work-arounds to a number of issues experienced with the Stelvio and other CARC bikes.

Ride it...... If it speaks to you buy it, especially if you want a new/newer bike. May be ast chance to get a new one......... Styling puts me off, but the Stelvio is super comfortable, super capable, and a very nice ride. I have a Norge and Griso, Seriously considered the Stelvio before I bought the Norge, really liked it but decided on a more conventional ST so bought the Norge.

I bought a Stelvio to use for long trips, having a few other Guzzis to ride around town.  However, I found that the Stelvio quickly became my go-to bike for many local rides, as well.  It's just that good, particularly once I updated the ECU with a Beetle map (John Brooks has a good one, too).

Highly recommended.

My ST3 was my favorite bike ever in the mountains. So constant in its handling. Not the best engine, but the best chassis by far.

The ST3 is such a nice machine. Of the bike's I've ridden, it's the absolute SPORT end of the Sport-Touring continuum - and a real joy in the mountains... until I point up it up a patch of rough pavement and get turned back by the "Pavement Ends 1000 Feet" signs. The luggage is by far the best factory bags for urban use - tucked into the tail and easy to split lanes.

I figure a top case (without the sides) would make the Stelvio a good commuter and lane-splitter. All three cases would allow me to leave all my gear securely in the bike's cases at the airport for business travel. I can only fit my boots and jacket in the ST3 cases - so I have to cable lock my helmet.

Yes, that seems to be a great price for a brand new '17 Stelvio out there...I contacted their LasVegas shop and found the OTD price to be about $12,300 plus sales tax to be paid in your home state...that is a delivered to your door price, shipping using HaulBikes, which is a premier shipper, in my opinion.  One could do a fly and ride and save $675 and they would hang on to the bike until spring too.  All good to know...

Advertised price means that it is an advertisement. 

Out the door costs are what you negotiate with. If sellers won't do that, then you can complain, IMHO.

I have two friends who bought bikes from them, one used one new and both had shopped all the local dealers here in so ca and a few in other states and got the best deal there. Don't have any personal experience with them but would certainly consider them when its time for another bike.

The Ventura Astro top case and mounts are still available for the ST3, from the distributor in Temecula or from dealers.  It's the right size for what you describe.  The Ventura mounts are compatible with the factory ST side case mounts, so you can use anywhere from three to no cases in any combination.  Also, the top case mounting plate can be removed very quickly when desired and what remains (an additional grab rail) does not greatly affect the looks of the bike.  I don't commute on mine, so I dismount the top case and mounting platform except when touring.

I've had no problems putting helmets in ST side cases BTW, but you have to orient them as shown in the diagram inside the case.

that's interesting because that's exactly what I intend to do myself, due to carpal tunnel syndrome.  Love the fast, comfortable, and utterly reliable Aprilia but can't take the clip-ons anymore

However I've done many 700-800 mile day trips on Stelvio without any issues. Actually finished the Ironbutt with Stelvio, 1000miles in 19.5 hours.

Rode 1 block from GP Motorcycles to El Indio to inaugurate my new saddlebags with world famous chips and salsa (red and green for Italian flag) and cook-at-home enchiladas. No sooner did I park, then a guy comes across the street... says, "Gorgeous bike. I don't mean to pry, but how much does something like that cost?" I said, "I just bought it 5 minutes ago, right there" (pointing).

Anyways thanks again for all the responses. I had a nice ride home and found an excuse to go to the store after dinner. I think I'm gonna like this machine. What an amazing bargain on a new bike considering all the standard features on an NTX.

I rode my ST3 (which is now for sale at GP) to San Francisco last Sunday, and home Tuesday night (brrr). I think the Stelvio would have been even more comfortable and probably would have made far fewer gas stops.
