I have two Centauros. One red and silver, and one yellow and anthracite. Why? I am still not sure. I have had the red one for for over 15 years. The other I bought just two years ago.
The stuff in the barn is getting a bit overwhelming. So if you know anyone in the Northeast that ...  I will most likely be selling them and a few other bikes in the spring. Anyone know someone who would like a modified Triumph triple race bike? Lot's of money in the motor.

There are too many different bikes I want to try.  I have yet in 30+ motorcycles bought the same model again.

The closest I have come is replacing a V7 cafe with the V7III carbon, and owning 3 different bike in the Harley touring line.  (Road Glide Ultra, Road King, and Road Glide Special.

I have thought about a second V7III set up like a scrambler.

Not now, but long ago I had 2 Harley (Aermacchi) 125 Rapidos at the same time, and in the 80's had 2 Honda FT500 Ascots. Loved them.

Glad I'm not the only one. Seems the first one is the most difficult to find, but as soon as you have one, the second falls in your lap ridiculously easy. Remembering how hard and scarce they are, how can you pass it up???

My first goose is a 76 T3 basket case - all complete, low miles. Parked in 1980 with a broken shift pall spring. And then a couple years later I got a 77 T3. Not being familiar with Guzzis I needed an easier intro. The 76 is s still apart, but hasn't degraded to 'parts bike' status. The intention is still to put her back together one day.

Six months after getting the 77, an 87 LM showed up. Love that thing, but it's not one of those bikes you turn back around for one last glance as you're walking away. So now it's joined by an 85LM that's getting the 1000S treatment. They'll be the same, but not really.

I guess the genus of having spares came from my early years when having a bike down in the summer was the worst thing possible, so an extra for 'just in case' made a whole lot of sense.

On the IOM a few years ago I was in a pub in the couttryside when I noticed two identical blue tractors in the car park.  They were absolutely identical.  Even had the same number plate....
Have heard of other ‘identical’ bikes sharing legal providence.
Well, you can only ride one at a time!

I have three 1200 Sports, two black and one red.  Also two California Vintages, exactly like the photo above. Plus two California 1400 Customs.

Previously, had three EV Tourings, and two Brevas.  All sold to make room in the garages.

I've been accumulating late BMW airheads for the last 34 years, not all identical, but variations on a theme. Started with an R65LS bought new in '84, then an R100GS bought new in '91. Then added a used '83 R80ST in 2004 and an '83 R80T last year. All still get ridden at least once a year, in fact the LS and R80T are my only bikes at my Florida winter quarters.

I don't know what you are talking about my friend!  :grin:

But yes, I like having more than just one of anything I like around, that is toys I'm planning on keeping until the end of my time. I have been asked many times on why I own seven 1100 Sports, and I guess I only ended up with so many of them since I love the hunt to find another. My original goal was to own one of each originally available factory color (silver, red, blue, yellow, and black), which I now have. I found two more bikes which were unique in their own way along the way. One of those bikes was a original yellow 97, which was painted in BMW red since her original owner wanted a red 1100 Sport when they came out here for sale in the US, but all red bikes were already sold, so he bought a yellow bike and had her painted in red. This bike needed a lot of work when I bought her, but she is now my main 1100 Sport bike that I'm riding. The other "extra" 97 Sport was sitting neglected for seven years under a tarp out in the weather, and that bike took a while to get her running again. This bike is running again, and I'm planning on turning this original yellow bike, which needs a complete cosmetic restoration, into a tribute bike of the original Moto Guzzi R&D 1995 red & silver R&D prototype 1100 Sport.

My other five bikes are all a little different. The different colors are obvious, but two (silver and blue) are carb 1996 models, whereas the other three are EFI models. One of the 97 with 1388 original miles is completely stock (except the cross-over), while others have different exhaust systems ranging from one with the original MG exhaust and others with Mistral carbon / Stainless Steel, or Staintune Stainless Steel exhaust systems. One has K&N pod air filters, the others have their original ram-air boxes installed. Most have the Creedon ECU chip, one still has the original chip.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes, those seven 1100's seem to be all alike, but they are actually all different, if you are looking at the micro level.

But I'm also looking at my bikes more as being a collection, which I love to look at, versus something I need to actually use or ride. I only ride three of my 1100's a couple of times per year. The others are there mostly for looks, but all are fully serviced and will fire up without any problems.

I also have a couple of other bikes sitting in the barn. One of them is my 96 GSXR1100W, which I love to ride. I have been looking now for a year to find me a second GSXR1100W, just because, but finding one of them is almost as hard as finding another 1100 Sport.

There is a 2015 BMW K1300S currently for sale on eBay, and I would love to add that bike also to my collection. I owned a 2011 K1300S but sold her some years ago, and I miss riding such a well engineered and powerful bike. I was thinking yesterday about maybe selling my 96 Silver & Blue 1100's to fund (in part) the purchase of the BMW, but I know that I would never be able to replace those bikes after they were gone........

So in conclusion,

It's not always easy having Champagne taste while living on a beer budget!  :)

This is the R&D 1100 Sport tribute bike I'm planning on building next year

Thank you Andy , I knew you would be able to provide some valuable insight to this apparently fairly common phenomenon.
And thank's for sharing the details and pic's of your fantastic collection. Well done!

Late to the party.

Reader's Digest answer: "Why not"

Full version: I can easily argue yes or no. Since it would be easy to argue against owning two of the same (for someone who wanted/valued variety), I'll just put forth the positive.

First and foremost bikes are finite and will eventually wear out. So if it's all you want/need, why not have another, especially at a good price.

But even before it wears out it may fail. Having a "spare" helps if it means you don't have to reschedule a planned ride while fixing the other, but it also can help with diagnosis having a "known good spare" to use as a substitute during troubleshooting.

Speaking of repair and maintenance there are efficiencies there as well. You can keep a store of filters and maintenance supplies that apply to both bikes, same with maintenance literature, special tools, experience etc.

If desired, you can also use the duplicate bikes to deviate slightly from identical twins (Cafe and bagger, naked and faired, hot-rodded and stock etc.).

So I get it.

I've got a friend who currently has FOUR 07+ EFI Rubbermount Sportsters:

* Totally hot-rodded 883L converted to a 1250R
* 1200R with USD forks and upgraded brakes (old forks and dual discs are in my 1200Lr)
* XR1200X
* 1200CX Roadster

So I totally get it.

Hopefully more to come, maybe as early as tomorrow!

Ten or so years ago I fell in love with 5th generation Honda VFR's. I bought a salvaged one for $2,000, fixed up pretty nice, and then turned around and bought a pristine used one for $4,000. Ended up with 2 red 1998 VFR's. My wife and most MC buddies thought I was nuts. Why would you want to have 2 identical bikes?! I thought it was completely logical: I didn't spend a lot on the bikes, so I felt fine tearing them down to learn how to maintain and fix them when things went wrong, even though my mechanical skills are minimal. I always had one running just fine. Back then I frequently had riding friends visit; felt free lending them one of the VFR's.

Fast forward to today: I'm on my second 2V Norge; put about 55K miles on the first before I lost it to a deer strike 2 summers ago. Bought the second a year ago for $4,200 with only 2,300 miles on the ODO; it now has 15K miles on it. This is my favorite bike of all time, and I can see riding it, or another one just like it until I'm 80 years old (will be 70 in a few weeks). There is a 2007 one for sale by the local dealer for $4,500; it has only 5,500 miles on it and has new tires and has just been serviced; sounds like a good deal to me.

How crazy would it be for me to buy this bike? Hell, I already have a Norge, just like it, that is running fine. Also have a few other bikes. Do any of you possess 2 of the same bike, or, at least have the desire to?

If Guzzi were still making a comfortable, capable sport-tourer, I'd probable buy a new one and hang on to the old Norge, too.

Jon

Hey Jon, hope you are doing well.  Of course, I'll say do it for sure since you get the snazzy different colored seat with the new one  :grin: and also you'd be helping Enzo out too.  Two birds.

My KTM 950 Supermoto is the bike of bikes for me and has stood the test of time in my garage while many, many others have come and gone.  I've most certainly considered getting a 2nd one at various points, so I totally understand this logic.

Old friend Ralph, formerly krglorioso here on the board, had 2 different California Stones and enjoyed them both greatly.  Never once mentioned getting bored.

I have frequently owned 2 Eldo's at the same time and once owned 2 Laverda 750's and now am down to one of each.  I currently own two very similar  Honda dual sports, a 99 NX 650 and a '12 XR650L.

I used the NX for light off roading but the faring panels are delicate and easily breakable. Bought the XRL as a 'last deployment present' when I came back from the 'stan in 14 thinking it would be pretty much the NX with better off road bits and planned to sell the NX.  I was wrong - they have the same engine and alot of parts but are very different machines.  I owned two XL 350 Hondas for about 6 years until one was stolen.  I owned two XS 650 Yamaha 650 twins for about 6 years, and two Suzuki 650 savages for about two years.  I kept one of the Suzuki s for about 5 years.  It made maintenance easy since they used the same parts.

The fourth one is hot mustard.......the fifth is another lime green. I wasn’t looking much, bought one and then three more show up within a week. Found one more rusted and abandoned to make five total to make four running. I’ve been lucky, or nuts...

Beautiful!  Love those bikes.  Regret never buying one.  Wish they'd make something like that still.

Sat one with my wife at the dealer - she encouraged me to get one, but my $ brain said no. I told the same thing to Sonny Angel with it's analogue in the eighties.

I was going to say no to this thread question, when I remembered my father found a '72 850 Eldo in Blythe CA and called me to come get it, since he'd already put a down payment on it. $500 total, but I never got it running past the rusted gas tank, just stole parts off it for my first '72 Eldo.

Then I traded both of them for an 1895 45/70 rolling block buffalo rifle, which I then traded back to the guy for 450 Honda, but that's another story.
