02 cali stone air filter change?
« on: February 11, 2019, 08:47:27 AM »
Ive been poking around the 'net checking on how to change the air filter on this bike. Some say the tank has to come off, some stay on, just disconnect the lines, and some say there is space to lift it enough with lines on...  So for you all that have done it...  before I dig in, whats the best way to get in there to check the air filter on this thing?

Tank off. You need to get to that front airbox screw. Or lift the tank so high that the lines have to come off anyway. Change the fuel filter while you are thinking about it too.

+1 Tank off.  Take care to remember where each of the lines/hoses go.  There are more than a couple.  You can use a block of wood to raise the back of the tank a bit to loosen the fuel line from the petcock and disconnect the fuel level sensor.

Tank off & in a safe place, don't kick it. Slide it back & look or return fuel line in neck area, it has to be off too. AND vent line, overflow cap line. Electric fuel cock & level connectors also. Put a block under rear tab so wires don't pinch sitting on floor.

Be careful with the red gas line connector, they come off but it may be a struggle, I’ve heard some guys say they shoot it with WD 40 or similar to loosen it up.

Thanks guys. Still learning the ins and outs of these bikes. I am not new to turning wrenches, on cars or bikes, but the Guzzi's are all new, and I dont want to go in blind and start breaking shit. :)  Just went out to eyeball the situation, and looks like Ill pull the tank for sure. I have a few vent/vac hoses i see in the area that are pretty dry rotted. getting that tank off, and getting a better look under there would be a wise move anyways.

Well turns out I have a aftermarket filter, without the airbox top...  just a frame holding the filter in place. ...  Good because I can see its clean, but bad becouse I want to remove the tank anyways to replace the dryrotted hoses

This is what I found...  Does it look like something someone just made, or is it a something from the aftermarket?

Someone marketed those. Too bad about the oiled filter that lets in a lot of grit.

Never understood how some people can get obsessive about the oil or gasoline that they use, then put on an air filter that is known to pass crude into the engine.

fancy setup. I think fast by ferraci used to sell bmc air filters and the grid. Others used K&N's and cut up the original airbox.

There's every possibility you may have an updated ECU map to match that airbox mod.  Nothing to worry about as long as it's running well.

I just got it in dec, and other then a quick buzz down the road, and around my yard, ive not put miles on it. It has a FBF crossover, so might have gotten the airbox mod there. Seems to run well from those little rides, so maybe its been remapped....  All I know is it sounds amazing.

I may be confused, but I didn't think you could remap that ICU, just add a powercommander to adjust the mapping. I thought the only adjustment was the TPS setting.

OK, almost off..  :)   Lots of rotted vent hoses I just had to cut. Ill be shopping later today...  OK, so one thing.. on the main hose from the tank to the filter. Mounted on the tank is a vac diaphragm that the hose vits on. there is a small vac nipple on that diaphragm that doesnt have a hose on it. I have not found one laying around yet, but what is it for, and what should be hooked to it? .

OK, cool.  I did some searching and that seemed to be the issue.  I just know that back in the early days of auto FI, and mods, a lot of people did strange things to boost fuel... making sure that wasnt the case here..

So tanks off.. had to cut the feed line because it was so dry rotted...  So off to the parts store and getting some fuel/vac line and some clamps.

Be sure you use fuel injection line and the proper clamps for everything after the pump. Any vent lines can be normal hose.

Having not seen a stock filter on these....  Do you think that a stock filter will work with this hold down frame?  I normally dont care for the KN style in bikes...  seem to let a lot of fine crud in..  but I have no issue with it open topped.

You might want to consider adding quick disconnect fuel line connectos such as these:

It had non FI hose between the filter and reg so I am assuming someones been in there before me. Filter looks new, so Im guessing that was done at the time the aftermarket air went in. Ill find some FI hose for that one. My local parts store was out of it, and also the FI style clamps..  So im on hold for now. The fuel Y looks and feels pretty good. After I get all the bugs worked out this year Ill replace that  just as a maintenance because I hear they go bad.

The stock filter is the same shape, so the aftermarket frame will work.

If memory serves me, NAPA Gold 3008 is a suitable replacement fuel filter for the bikes with the external plumbing. Everything after the pump needs to be fuel injection line. I would argue that includes the return line. The larger line between the tank and pump does not need to be pressure line, nor does the vent lines from the frame tube to the heads. The crankcase vent tube likely needs replaced as well. I think the '02's still come off the back of the engine and go forward to the high point of the frame. There was a radiator hose off something that works with a little trimming for cheap. All the lines on my EV's were from Gates when original. Easy to obtain from parts store.

You're in there. Go ahead and do the filter. Note the NAPA filter is slightly smaller in diameter and needs some duct tape around the body for the clamp to hold it. No big deal there.

Ya I thought the return hose could be just hose...  but then saw how the system works, and the pressure reg is on the return hose and mounted on the tank...  Money well spent IMOH for the good stuff.

I checked the breather hose and it seems well. Ill give it a second look.

I decided to get a OE filter. Im really not keen on how much dirt oiled filters let by. I did find a little oily residue in the air box, so im going to go to paper. She has low miles, and I plan to keep it healthy for a long time. Doubt ill loose any flow on this engine. Ill keep the open box and just run it..

I too prefer paper filters, but I was making reference to the fuel filter. It's kind of a pain to get to so if it's been there for a while, and you are doing all the lines anyway, it's just a good time to do that as well.

Its been changed at least once..  Its a aftermarket filter [tape around it to take up the space in the bracket..and kinda fresh marks on the banjo bolts.] so Im going to run it a year, and plan to replace it, and the Y pressure hose over the winter. Im sure after the first year running it, and because it only has 9K on it now... Ill find other stuff that needs doing also..

Yea, not sure it is worth touching at only 9k.
It is one of those things that will go 1/4 million miles, or 1/4 mile if you get bad gas.

On a related note, I noticed a news blurb where the inspectors in the state of Georgia claim that they have NEVER had a call about bad gasoline from QT or Racetrack stations, ever. And most calls come from, as expected, non-chain mom and pop stores, selling bad gas.
