Been riding it to work, I'm usually on my way to the office a little before 5am (7 mile commute)...so it's not bad when there's no traffic.
Much more fun stretching it's legs on the long way home though.

With the Sport C's the gearboxes are fragile so be aware of it and if your drain plug starts looking like a Christmas tree get to it early. Best bet is swap the internals from a five speed Cali into the box. You won't notice the difference apart from less noise.

The '97 gearbox, with it's helically cut transmission gears, is not considered fragile - correct?
Many '95/'96 get a '97 gearset (or 5th) when they develop problems with the straight cut gears - from what I've read over the years.

Other than valve lash adjustment - aren't most Guzzis a PITA to work on? (clutches come to mind) 

One of the best styling exercises ever made into a motorcycle though, no doubt.

Yeah, the Sport 1100 injection, like what you have, has got helical gears in the transmission.  An improvement over what I have in my Sport 1100 carbureted.

I kinda like the straight-cut gear whine, though.  And I've been lucky with my 5th gear, so far.

The straight cut box is actually a big attraction for me. Closing on 40k miles, no issues yet. Of course it's been thrashed every time it's been ridden.

seems counterintuitive that a straight cut gear set would be weaker than helically cut ones.....I love the whine of straight cut gears.

I try not to complain too much about the bike around town, but that's only because out on the open road, being ridden hard and fast - is where it really shines. Everything else, like commuting in traffic....suffers by comparison.

It loves to be pushed hard, its a very rewarding riding experience on twisty two-lane at a pace.



I have a question - I keep seeing Sport Corsa mentioned, but I don't know what makes one a Corsa - the name as it's applied to the 1100 Sport, is new to me.

I have theories about the reputation the carb Sports have for gearbox problems. I don't worry about mine.

As I recall, 1100 Sport Corsa had Carrillo rods and other bits.   

Two-tone paint and black engine.

It was never available in The USA market.

The "final edition" of the Sport 1100 of which only 200 were made and as Rocker said none came to the US. In addition to the bits Rocker mentioned I also believe they came with a carbon fiber Termignoni exhaust although the brochures that year show the standard factory stainless unit. The motor was completely blacked out with polished covers, it was pretty cool aesthetically.

I'm fairly new to Guzzis.   Ride a small block V7 Stone, which I love to bits.

But . . . these big block 1100s are drop dead, stunningly beautiful bikes.   

Probably opening a big can of worms here.   But what are they like?   What's the going price for one in good running condition?

Would it drive me nuts as a daily commuter?  Geared too tall, gets 30 mpg, and not reliable?   What's the wet weight?

I have a 1996 model sport 1100. I would not recommend the bike for commuter duty. Tall gearing and extreme seating position are not friendly to city riding.

The bikes weigh right at 500 pounds. They are very reliable. You can buy them for $3500 to $5,000.

They are great machines in their element. They were developed from endurance racers of the late 1980s, so very nice sporting motorcycles.

Just don't try to make them into something they're not.

Mine's a 1995 carb model. Their element is the open road, great in the sweepers. I'm lucky it's a perfect fit for me & great for long distances. A buzz to sit on, a buzz to ride, but as Rocker59 says, not a commuter.

Finally! Picked up my 96 sport and promptly put 500 miles on her. First impressions... very comfortable, sweet motor, corners like its on rails, sounds fantastic, looks like its going fast sitting still. Im very happy!

The Kid is going to bring his 94 down in a couple of weeks for a clutch, transmission work, etc. I'm looking forward to a peek under her skirt.  He'll make it pretty over the winter. He's having a great time going through it. It's the first time he's brought one back from the grave, and found he likes doing that as well as I do.
